Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) is effective because it transplants the patient's own healthy DHT-resistant hair follicles and follicular units from one area of the scalp to the balding or thinning area.
Follicular units from an adult scalp contain between one and four terminal or full thickness hair follicles, one or two fine vellus hairs, sebaceous glands, a small muscle, tiny nerves and blood vessels, and a fine band of collagen that surrounds the follicular unit called the perifolliculum. Therefore, a follicular unit is the hair bearing structure of the skin and the hair follicle which is kept intact during the hair transplant surgery to ensure maximum growth and results.
In order to remove follicular units from the back of the scalp with the least risk of causing damage, Dr. Brandy feels the donor tissue is best removed in one piece. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method is similar to the earliest form of donor hair harvesting. Instead of individual plugs or punch grafts of 10 to 15 hairs being removed uniformly from the donor area, micro-plugs of follicular units (1-3 hairs) are taken in a scattered randomized fashion through a motorized tool.
In order to visualize and select the targeted follicular units (FUu2019s) the donor area must be shaved. The greater the number of grafts needed, the wider the shaved area, which may pose a cosmetic concern for some of the male patients. Additionally, studies have shown that the surviving rate of FUE grafts can be significantly lower than those microscopically dissected from a linear strip. It is because of the potential for a lower survival rate of FUu2019s that Dr. Brandy reserves this method for small hair transplant cases. Such cases may include placing hair grafts in older, poorly healed donor scars; obtaining grafts from areas of the scalp that are either too high or too low to remove a strip of donor hair or patients with extremely tight scalps.
