What is Testosterone?
Testosterone is a hormone that regulates a man’s sexual desire, aids in the development of the male reproductive system as well as establishes muscle mass, bone density and hair growth. Depending on the age of the man, normal blood testosterone levels fall between 900 ng/dl and 300 ng/dl.
For men, testosterone production begins to gradually decline around the age of 30; however the symptoms of low testosterone may not be felt until a man is in his 40’s or 50’s. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) supplements the natural decline of testosterone production caused by the aging process. Healthy testosterone levels provide the following benefits:
- Healthy Sexual Function and Libido
- Regulates Sperm Production
- Increases Muscle Mass
- Maintains Bone Density
- Restful Sleep
- Mental Alertness and Clarity
- Promotes Hair Growth
How do I know if I have Low Testosterone?
If you are experiencing any symptoms of low testosterone such as fatigue, low sex drive, lack of mental clarity, muscle loss and weight gain then you may have low testosterone levels. A man’s testosterone is classified as deficient or low when his blood testosterone level falls below 300 ng/dl. Lower testosterone levels are a normal part of the aging process. However, it is important to discuss the symptoms you are experiencing and attributing to low testosterone with your primary care doctor as these symptoms may be an indication of another health issue such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression or high blood pressure.
How Do I Test My Testosterone Levels?
Testosterone levels in men can be measured through saliva testing or a blood test. At The Skin Center for Men, we use a simple saliva test to determine if you are deficient in testosterone and therefore a candidate for Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT).
The amount of testosterone replacement you receive will be based on your total testosterone levels obtained from the results of your testosterone tests. The goal is to get your testosterone levels back into an optimal range.
What Happens If I Have Low Testosterone?
If your testosterone test reveals you have low testosterone levels, then you will be prescribed Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). The amount of testosterone you are prescribed will be based on your total testosterone levels measured from your test.
What is Andropause?
Andropause, or male menopause, is the gradual decline of testosterone in men. The name andropause derives its name from androgens. Androgens are a group hormones, including testosterone, that aid in the formation of the male reproductive system and male characteristics.
